Aside from the determination of hardness values (symbolized by the universal hardness HU) this test principle opens the opportunity for ascertaining further important characteristics of materials' mechanical properties in a quick and comparatively economic manner. At present all possibilities of the universal hardness test are not yet completely explored. This paper will inform about the effects of different heat treatments on some HU-characteristics (derived from indentation tests) ofheat-treatable steels. The task was to find out, whether this test is suitable for quick and nearly non-destructive testing the interesting properties of materials after heat treatment. Using a customary microhardness test equipment five specialHU-characteristics of six different structures of the steels 34CrMo4 und 50CrV4 were ascertained after modified heat treatments and compared with Vickers hardness and impact work.
