The technology's impact is such that more operators are using it not only for expensive directional and horizontal wells, but also for those less costly to more precisely target the operator's geological objective. The technique also has been applied in vertical wells to eliminate spiraling. Rotary steerable systems (RSS) are becoming smaller to accommodate the increasingly popular slimhole drilling application. In a recent development, Tesco Corp.'s Casing Drilling technology was combined with RSS in a South Texas well.
