Wasted Work Time: Management and Supervision Are Key to Improving Productivity

"Labor productivity growth is the chief source of growth in real GDP [gross domestic profit] per person over time," explains Nicholas Grafts, a professor at the London School of Economics. In his foreword to the 2005 Proudfaot Productivity Report, Grafts says that improvements in labor productivity come partly from investment in capital equipment; but he describes how better management skills and smarter utilization of the labor force contribute more. "Management consistently gives too little priority to the apparently mundane issues like supervision of labor, planning, and control," he says, "opting more often to invest in new plants and equipment."
