Cardiovascular disease (GVD) has been a growing American epidemic since the mid-19th century; but it wasn't until the Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948, that we started to understand some of the risk factors involved. In 1961, researchers discovered that high blood cholesterol increased the risk for heart disease. Further, in 1988, high levels of HDL cholesterol were found to reduce the risk of death. These links between hyper-lipidemia and heart disease have been confirmed by other largestudies and are now a focus of treatment and prevention.
