Nothing can compare with the warm, rich colours of an autumn garden, especially one perched high in the mountains, where the air is crisp and clear, and the tree canopies allow cool-climate plants to thrive. One such garden is Bebeah at Mount Wilson,NSW, in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.The legacy of tall, mature trees allowed owner-designer Barry Byrne to create, with massive new plantings, the feeling of a long-established garden, one that offers the kind of enchantment you rarely experience in Australia. On the one hand, the garden has the bones of a formal British garden with deciduous trees, conifers and neat hedges, and on the other, it's reminiscent of Japanese gardens, with maples and mass plantings of azaleas. A clever mix of styles.
