A pump operator learns early that he can move a lot of liquid by turning on a process pump. The operator doesn't control the pump. The system controls the pump. Specifically, the resistance in the pipes and fittings control the pump. It is the exact opposite of what most operators are taught. With a variable speed pump, the operator manipulates the flow and pressure through the pipes to meet the demands of production and sales. It is natural to think that operating a pump is like driving a car. Push the accelerator pedal and the car goes faster. Turn on the lights and drive at night. Push the brake pedal and stop the car. It's an incorrect thought. It really doesn't work that way. It is the exact opposite of what most operators are taught.
