摘要

The value of stormwater harvesting has long been recognised. Domestic rainwater harvesting systems can reduce a household's drinking water consumption by 50%. One approach is to employ a water management controller that can monitor water availability and select the most appropriate water source. Here we feature the WiWo, 'Water In - Water Out' system. Only 2% of the world's fresh water is readily available for human use and it needs to be piped in from rivers and dams, that are often hundreds of miles away from where the water is needed. Meanwhile, billions of litres of rainwater fall on our cities and simply washes down the drains unused. By harvesting this vast amount of stormwater we can significantly reduce the demand for piped potable water, and ease the burden on metropolitan water storage and delivery systems. To put the possible water saving into perspective, the amount of water falling on the rooftops of Sydney (Australia) is around 180 gigalitres each year, which is approximately 30% of the city's total annual water consumption from all uses.
