In the 1950s, industrial companies began an irreversible trend towards heat-transfer technology with centralized heat generation. Accordingly, heat is not generated at the location where it is used, but instead in centralized boiler units. The heat is then transferred to heat-transfer liquids so it can be transported to the places where it will be used, such as in reactors in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, for plastics processing, in particle board production plants, in brickworks, or in the food industry. In place of water, heat transfer units employed aliphatic hydrocarbons (specially formulated petroleum products) because these heat transfer oils can handle very high temperatures without the high pressure associated with water. Later, aromatic-based synthetic heat transfer oils were developed. These materials are more expensive to procure, but are better able to withstand high temperatures than petroleum products and have an even higher temperature range.
