Soft-starting drives help regulate flow

A significant water reclamation plant in Singapore required variable speed drives to handle its sewage pump motors. Careful handling was required to avoid torsional stress on the motor shafts, which were liable to break. A range of medium voltage variable speed drives offered smooth starting and improved water flow. The Changi Water Reclamation Plant is one of the largest water reclamation facilities in the world. Located at the eastern edge of Singapore, the plant is mainly underground and is compact, taking up only 32 hectare, less than a third of land area needed for a conventional layout. "The designers have incorporated a space saving design concept - things like stack treatment tanks and also stack treatment facilities like our sludge treatment facilities. All the treatment facilities are stacked on top of the other so as to save space," Yong Wei Hin, assistant director of Changi Water Reclamation Plant told reporters in 2009.
