Dennis Keen and Oliver Hodgson, Penspen, discuss common findings when reviewing and auditing pipeline integrity management systems. A pipeline integrity management system (PIMS) is a comprehensive, systematic and integrated set of arrangements implemented by an operator to assess, mitigate, and manage pipeline risk. Over the past 16 years, Penspen has performed over 60 reviews and audits of pipeline operators' PIMS. These have invariably involved operators responsible for large diameter oil and gas pipes, both onshore and offshore. Penspen has identified a number of common findings from these reviews and audits, highlighting areas in which operators have fallen short of good practice.
