The author from Allweiler AG in Germany compares the use of synthetic heat-transfer and petroleum-based oils in modern pumps - and looks at how the pumps are applicable for hot water with identical material combination. As soon as the temperature in a heat-carrier system becomes too high for water, a plant operator must choose between petroleum-based or synthetic oils as the heat-carrier liquid. This usually happens once feed temperatures in excess of 200℃ become necessary. Until recently, petroleum-based heat-carrier oils were often the first choice simply because they cost less. But synthetic oils are now beginning to assume a more prominent role.
