The poultry industry demands simpler, more efficacious and cheaper vaccines. Besides the conventional live and killed vaccines for the most important poultry diseases, a new set of tools have been added to the portfolio: vector vaccines. As world demand for animal protein is growing, the poultry industry coincides with this intensification. Concurrently, exchange of genetics and animals are incredibly active, and where animals travel, pathogens accompany them. Hence, the risk of bacteria and virusesspreading is also increased. This makes efficient and safe vaccination of the animals even more important. When farms become more intensified (over 100,000 birds in a single space), mass vaccination of flocks is strongly influenced by several factors. Assuring that a high enough portion of the birds in the flock gets vaccinated depends on, besides the type of infectious agent involved and the current epidemiological situation, two other main factors. These are the interference between vaccines and maternally derived antibodies and the quality of the vaccine administration. At a recent symposium - organised by Ceva Animal Health - this important issue was further discussed among 280 vaccine experts from aroimd the world. At the meeting, advanced technology regarding new types of vaccines in poultry were discussed and global experiences were exchanged. The meeting's focus was to elaborate more on the possibilities of vector vaccines to control economically severe diseases. What are the solutions available today and what is still to be discovered were among the topics discussed. But first, here is an insight in to what vector vaccines exactly are.
