Overproduction threatens the Brazilian poultry industry.

Production figures for poultry meat and eggs in Brazil are discussed, in the light of a predicted recession in 1999. Aspects of the industry covered include: a slow down in broiler business in 1998, for the first time in 10 yr; the erratic natureof markets for processed chickens; effects of the economic crisis in Asia on broiler exports; and a decline in domestic egg consumption.
