The general environment in which South African industry operates has intensified the degree of change. New laws have taken shape at an increasing rate and have had a major effect on the developments in the poultry industry. Increased exposure to imports and international markets throughout 1997 marked the trends. Egg producers saw an opportunity, and exports increased for a while but decreased again as a direct result of the exchange rate movements.
