Anchoring directional drills firmly to the ground has been a challenge since the machines were first developed. Traditionally, smaller HDD rigs with less than 100 000 lbs of pullback have been anchored with hydraulic stake downs. With larger rigs however, this method proves problematic and often requires costly repair jobs. For example, if you have a 100 00 lb rig pulling, it is likely that these stakes will not hold. On bigger rigs you can drive in pilings, dig a front foot pit and fill with concrete and sometimes more pilings. This method, however, proves inefficient and time-consuming as all of this has to be removed once the job has been completed.
