Much like the once-hyperactive pensioner clinging to assurances that productive days remain, the granddaddy of the unconventional shale plays stubbornly refuses to fade into retirement. To be sure, even as active drilling rigs in the core dry gas fairway of the Barnett Shale are becoming endangered species, daily production continues to rise year-on-year throughout the more than 6,000-sq-mi play underlying some 23 North Texas counties. The predominately gas-bearing Mississippian shale, widely heralded as the proven ground for hydraulic fracing technology, also is reinventing itself, in a way, with most of the more recent drilling activity focusing largely on the oil-rich Combo play to the north.
