Marcellus groundwater claims: A case for scientifically informed decisions

Investment in the development of Pennsylvania's Mar-cellus Shale gas tesoutces (Fig. 1) has brought, and promises to continue to bring, lower energy costs and new jobs to the state. It has also attracted litigation alleging that well drilling, hydraulic fracturing and gas production have contaminated drinking water supplies and damaged property near some operations.
