Analysis and simulation of belt tracking of conveyor belts

Mistracking of the belt is one of the important operating problems of a belt conveyor. Reasons and counter-actions are known, however, the cause of mistracking and the effect on the belt are only known as an empirical relation. This paper will give a short overview about the main causes and the possible counter-actions of belt mistracking. Furthermore a mathematical approach will be presented for the numerical simulation of the belt sideways deformation. This approach is valid for flat-belts only, but with some simplifications it seems to be valid for troughed belt as well. With this simulation a prediction can be given about type, number and the position of the possible training idlers.
