The lignite-fired units of the 150 MW class were built in the Rhine-land in the 1950s. They were a consequence of the growing energy hunger of the young German Federal Republic. To ensure the supply of these power plants with fuels, the development of a deep opencast mine was planned. A new excavator class had to be procured for the operation of this opencast mine with unprecedented dimensions. This was how bucket-wheel excavator 255 came into being. It was the first bucket-wheel excavator with a daily output of 110,000 bcm+t, making it the world's oldest large-scale bucket-wheel excavator still in service. Table 1 lists its technical data.
