The Inden opencast mine in the west of the Rhenish lignite mining area in Germany supplies the 2800 MW Weisweiler power plant with lignite in stand-alone operation. This means that the Weisweiler plant alone produces some 3 % of German electricity. Each year, up to 22 million tons of lignite and up to 100 million cubic metres of overburden are transported by the belt conveyors measuring a total 45 km in length.
