Reflections on water - new dispersants and rheology modifiers for gloss emulsion systems

Waterborne alkyds can achieve excellent gloss and low VOC levels, but formulation problems can arise, giving poor gloss retention and viscosity instability This paper discusses ways to overcome these issues by using specific chemically adapted thickeners and dispersants. Significant amounts of surfactants in the emulsified alkyd resins can modify the performance of thickeners and dispersants, particularly by competitive adsorption or ion-dipole interaction mechanisms.
