Water-soluble nonionic derivatives of polysaccharides, in particular cellulose and starch derivatives, are used in paint systems to prevent the evaporation of water, which is required for hydration and processibility on the substrate. Because they control the key function of water retention in paint systems, renders, mortars and fillers, such additives have a decisive influence on the consistency (plasticity), open time, tack, adhesion (to the substrate), stability, resistance to sagging, tensile and compressive strength or shrinkage.
