Some of the most commercially successful methods of inhibiting fouling by marine organisms have involved the use of substances, such as tributyltin chloride and cuprous oxide, in antifouling coatings. However, these systems are coming under pressure due to their damaging effects on the aquatic environment and there is a need to find non-fouling alternative coatings that do not release toxic materials.
