In recent years there has been a trend towards displaying the natural wood appearance on exterior surfaces. Clear coatings on wood have more difficulty providing long term performance due to their transparency:one of the main problems is a loss of adhesion due to failure of the underlying wood surface. Most commercially available UV absorbers will absorb only up to 370 nm,whereas lignin is known to be degraded by radiation up to 440 nm. Water repellency is another important coating property for wood surfaces and tliere has been much interest in the use of hydrophobic nanomaterials in coatings recendy.
