One of the more important challenges for automotive coatings, currently, is improving the scratch resistance (particularly via refinish coatings). One of the methods being studied is the use of nano-fillers to form an inorganic-organic hybrid composite material. Improvements in mechanical, thermal, electrical and magnetic properties have been reported (over the pure polymer properties), as a result of dispersing delaminated single layers of silicates.
