The Largest Rabies Vaccination Programme in the World

On 4 September 1995, at the World Veterinary Congress in Yokohama, Japan, Dr Charles Merieux, the son of the "Institut Merieux"' founder, officially announced the start of a major vaccination programme against rabies for veterinary students in countries where rabies is endemic. This excludes Western Europe and North America. This operation, called "Target Rabies 1995 Prevention", is undertaken in honour of the 100 year anniversary of the death of Pasteur and is an initiative of Dr Charles Merieux himself. Students of veterinary schools in over 50 developing countries will take part in this project, which has actively started in over forty countries so far. In this way, Pasteur Merieux Con-naught hopes that 100,0000 students will get the opportunityto be vaccinated against rabies free of charge. To date, about 30,000 students have already been vaccinated.
