New Japanese Initiative for Breeding Tuna: Researchers use mackerel as surrogate parents

Japan is often accused of being responsible for the decline of bluefin tuna stocks (Thunnus spp.) because of its insatiable appetite for tuna sashimi. Now a team of researchers at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology may be able to help reverse the stock decline. The team is led by Dr. Goro Yoshizaki, who is described as having an almost evangelical approach to perfecting a method of assisted reproduction for the species, because of his country's role in the decline of the wild stocks.
