Researchers with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) in Queensland, Australia have found that marine worms can be used like live vacuum cleaners to keep sand filters functioning properly and to help keep the water clean at marine hatcheries and fish farms. Senior department biologist Dr Paul Palmer, who is leading the work, said in interview recently that he and his colleagues have discovered that the worms can keep fairly substantial areas clean, and that they grow well and can be harvested to provide feed for the stock.
