The queen conch, (Strombus gigas) a large gastropod mollusc, lives in shallow sea grass beds of Florida, the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Caribbean Islands, and the northern coasts of Central and South America. Conch have been harvested for hundreds of yearsfor subsistence and commercial uses, and are now a threatened fisheries species. Listed in 1992 in CITES Appendix II (Convention for the International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna), queen conch are now regulated to ensure that the fisheries are sustainable and that the conch have been legally acquired.
