Ischemic pseudotumor of the colon: an insidious form of ischemic colitis.

We congratulate Glauser and colleagues [1] on the interesting information provided on ischemic colitis and would like to know their opinion about another aspect of this insidious disease. It is the ischemic pseudotumor (IP), which appears to be camouflage used by ischemic colitis to mimic colorectal carcinoma. Recently, we observed a 79-year-old woman who was referred for recent episodes of rectal bleeding. Colonoscopy revealed a cauliflower-like tumor located in the ascending colon with areas of hyper-emia and ulceration. Histologic examination of the tissue obtained by biopsy of the neoplasm showed ischemic colitis with no trace of malignancy. Repeat endoscopy at 2 and 4 weeks documented progressive resolution of the lesion until it had completely disappeared.
