Invited Commentary: Outcome in Children Operated for Membranous Subaortic Stenosis: Membrane Resection Plus Aggressive Septal Myectomy Versus Membrane Resection Alone: Subaortic Stenosis-How Deep Should the Knife Go?

Dr Tefera and colleagues are to be complimented for their straightforward comparison of two operative techniques for patients with membranous subaortic stenosis.1 This is truly a multinational study with authors from Ethiopia, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Israel, and the United States (Arizona). The authors compared simple membrane resection versus membrane resection plus septal myectomy. The addition of septal myectomy substantially decreased the risk of recurrence of the subaortic membrane, improved freedom from reopera-tion, and improved aortic valve function.
