The French government has reached an agreement with the country's energy industry to reduce fuel costs by ?0.06/L (28c/gal) for up to three months to help ease the burden on motorists who have been negatively impacted by a sudden increase in price. According to the country's finance minister Pierre Moscovici, the reduced cost would be "shared equally between the French state, oil companies, and supermarket chains" with each entity contributing ?0.03/L (14c/gal). According to an estimate, the measure will cost at minimum ?300MM ($375MM) in lost tax revenues over the three months. Based on current pump prices in the country, the measure will lower diesel prices by 4.1% and gasoline prices by 3.6%.
