The country saw petroleum product exports of $56.2B in 2012, rising 8.9% from $51.6B year-on-year, with the significant increase attributed to refinery upgrades and climbing oil prices worldwide. South Korean oil export earnings have risen steadily over the past few years, from 6.3% in 2009 to 6.8% in 2010, 9.3% in 2011, and 10.3% last year, when petroleum products constituted the country's largest export earner for the first time; the country's Ministry of Knowledge Economy expects this trend to continue through 2013.
