LNG didn't merit even a single page in Exxon's gas portfolio before its 1998 merger with Mobil, as Exxon had long favored pipeline gas projects over LNG (WGI Dec.18'98,p1). However, Mobil had an extensive commitment to LNG and, most importantly as it turned out, a partnership with state Qatar Petroleum (QP) in the tiny Mideast nation of Qatar, which contained the giant North field and its listed 900 trillion cubic feet of proven reserves.
