Sevenfold LNG Surge

Confirmation is starting to come through of the enhanced role LNG played in European supply last year, even as Russian piped gas imports plunged 24.5% (p2). UK LNG imports increased sevenfold in 2009 to 9/ billion cubic meters (6.8 million tons), providing around 10% of the nation's gas supply, according to WGI estimates. That compares with a previous peak of 3.5% in 2006 for LNG's contribution. Belgium and Italy also saw sharply higher LNG intake.
