UK LNG Energy-Savings: E.On Says Fine, RWE Says 'Nein'

Import terminals around the world use energy to warm up — regasify — LNG into natural gas that can be fed into pipelines. Most today burn gas on-site to do this, even though cooling water discharged warm from nearby power plants could often provide a more energy-efficient heat source. Nowhere is this more starkly illustrated than in the UK. In southeast England, National Grid's Isle of Grain terminal next year will begin taking heat from a new E.On-owned 1,275 megawatt gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) unit under a deal negotiated in 2007. At Milford Haven in West Wales, by contrast, RWE has a power project twice the size of E.On's but has secured no such deal with either of two nearby LNG terminals.
