Independent LNG importers are struggling to gain a foothold in Greece, despite an energy sector overhaul in 2010 designed partly to boost competition. They imported just 0,36 billion cubic meters of spot LNG last year — down 20% from the year before — and the country's massive economic problems mean sellers are now steering clear of independents because of broader fears about Greek firms' creditworthiness, exacerbating shortages caused by a drop in Russian pipeline exports amid freezing weather across much of Europe (p1).
