Perhaps with an eye toward downstream diversification opportunities related to the country's huge LNG export business, the Qatari Investment Authority (QIA) is buying a 6.16% stake in Spanish utility Iberdrola for roughly ?2.02 billion ($2.82 billion). The companies agreed in a memorandum of understanding signed Monday to develop global electricity-generation projects, with specific mention of the Middle East. Brazil could also feature heavily, as Iberdrola has pinpointed the country as a key growth market and in January finalized the purchase of electricity-distribution business Elektro Electricidade e Servicios for $2.4 billion.
