Namibia's Kudu gas field has defied development since its discovery in 1974, so is Gazprom tempting fate by lending its name to the latest attempt to bring the reserves to market? The Russian giant says Namibia has asked it to form a new consortium to monetize Kudu, and current field operator Tullow has publicly welcomed the move, saying Kudu needs "a strong political champion" to broker a gas-to-power deal that ties together development of Kudu's 1.3 trillion cubic feet reserves, funding and construction of a power plant in Namibia, and a power purchase agreement with South Africa (WGI Feb.16'05,p5).
