Tuesday marked the first day of trading in the shares of newly merged GDF Suez, and by midday the group was neck and neck with EDF in market capitalization — each worth roughly ?95 billion (150 billion). Last week, the French government formally renounced its majority stake in GDF, instead assuming a minority 36% interest in the new GDF Suez. The state still owns 85% of EDF.
