As temperatures rise with the arrival of summer in Europe, power demand is expected to creep up in step with the mercury. The reason is growing reliance on air conditioning,a relatively new phenomenon in Europe - which is now one of the fastest-growing markets for cooling equipment worldwide.Until recently, the summer was a slow time for the gas market. This year, extra demand may be coming from power generators striving to cope with heat-related demand peaks and make up for reduced hydroelectric output resulting from low reservoir levels following subnormal rainfall, especially in parts of southern Europe that are in the third year of a drought(WGI Feb.l5,p7).
