US Spoils Nafta LNG Parties

A rude awakening could await companies in Mexico and Canada looking to capitalize on the US shale boom by building LNG export plants that rely either partly or completely on US feedstock. US gas can be exported to both countries under the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta), with the Department of Energy (DOE) keeping an eye on the process. But if project backers outside the US intend to reexport the LNG to countries with which the US does not have a free trade agreement (FTA), the DOE will likely get far more closely involved - reviewing LNG project proposals in Canada and Mexico the same way it does US schemes. "Just because you have a license to export that gas to Canada doesn't mean you have a license to export those molecules on a boat" to other countries, Christi Tezak at Washington consultancy ClearView Energy Partners said.
