By 2050, some experts have suggested all the world's power could come from renewables, versus around 22% today. Not only does a new report from sister publication El New Energy back up that notion, it also suggests that renewable power will by midcentury be cheaper than continuing to use fossil fuels. The Energy Cost Report looks at the impact on the global energy mix of changing patterns in the cost of conventional and renewable forms of electricity generation from 2000 to 2050 (NE Jul.2'15). It finds that the ideal mix would include significant solar photovoltaics (PV) — which it expects to become the world's least-expensive generation technology by 2040, at the latest — along with onshore wind, plus natural gas and hydropower to compensate for renewables' intermittency, and low-carbon baseload generation from geothermal, concentrated solar power (CSP) and nuclear.
