About 17,000 people are expected to gather in the Qatari capital Doha over the next two weeks for the latest round of UN climate talks aimed at cutting global carbon emissions. The priority at the talks, which opened on Nov. 26, is to agree a new commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol, whose first phase runs out at the end of 2012. This would act as a bridging mechanism until a new, still-to-be-negotiated deal comes into force from 2020.
