UK Renewables Policy Uncertainty Continues to Vex Investors

Tensions over renewable energy policy within the UK's Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government were again evident last week, after energy minister John Hayes said the country should stop building onshore wind farms (WGI Sep.12' 12). The Conservative junior minister told two newspapers the UK was "peppered" with onshore turbines and "enough was enough." Although Prime Minister David Cameron insisted UK policy has not changed — as did Hayes' Liberal Democrat boss, energy and climate change minister Ed Davey — the comments have heightened investor uncertainty over renewables strategy, particularly subsidies, ahead of the release of a new energy bill focused on electricity market reform (EI New Energy Jul.26' 12).
