Skepticism Greets GE Effort to Enlarge Offshore Wind Turbines

The technology development arm of General Electric has begun a two-year study, backed by $3 million in US Department of Energy funding, into building a 15 megawatt generator for a wind turbine. That would be more than twice the size of today's largest commercial wind machines. GE hopes to develop a higher-output, lower-cost generator in the 10-15 MW range using superconducting magnet technology. First-phase development includes design and manufacture of a prototype, with locating a market for the bigger turbines pushed back to a second phase.
