MARKET INSIGHT: Euro Demand Fragile

Most Western European gas users with contracts indexed with little or no lag to crude and oil products were able to celebrate 20%-30% reductions in gas prices from the previous quarter at the start of 2009, according to quarterly data reported by Energy Advice (see European End-User Price Supplement,p1). That's due to a roughly 30% fall in the dollar price of Brent crude in the three months before end-January, when it reached the current 45 per barrel range.
