Domestic use of natural gas has proved elusive in much of West Africa,where Nigeria ranks among the world's top flarers,torching a whopping 15 billion cubic meters per year(1.45 billion cubic feet per day)of gas,or roughly half of current production(WGI Sep.5,p2).On a much smaller scale in neighboring Cameroon,investors are trying to develop stranded gas to fire local industry and power generation.With upfront costs of about 50 million,they are banking on delivering gas to businesses in the port and industrial capital of Douala at a huge discount to currently available fuels.
