Anticipating a 60% boost in natural gas production over the next two years from its supergiant South Pars field, Iran is making an aggressive bid to sell some of this new supply to neighboring countries. For now, potential buyers — including Oman and Kuwait — are entertaining the possibility, with top officials in both countries insisting prospects are realistic. But initial talks have not touched on price, which is almost certain to be a major stumbling block. To make any progress, Tehran will either have to soften its normally hard-line price stance or regional governments will have to bite the bullet and pay more than they do for domestic gas.
