China wants to hoist domestic gas use by at least 140% by 2020 as it moves to cut consumption of dirtier coal in line with amendments to environmental protection legislation. The big question is how. While natural gas is undeniably better for the environment than coal, industry insiders claim the distortions created by subsidized gas prices are creating obstacles to growth — they don't encourage domestic conventional or unconventional production, or make it profitable to import — leading to a great deal of uncertainty about the 2020 supply mix (WGI Apr.16'14).
